The long, vertical icicle drops of the Buckingham family have their genesis in candle burning chandeliers of early 19th century France. Executed in wrought iron and cast resin, with a St. Regis Bronze finish, the basic design is augmented with individual crystal buttons, a contribution of English designers remodeling many of the rooms in Buckingham palace in 1825. Realized here in champagne glass, these extend into the festoon, or long swags of buttons, descending from the top to the hoop. the popularity of the design reached a peak in the mid-19th century Victorian era, where it complemented, then as now, high-ceilinged fashionable residences. |
